Recent changes in release time will impact most divisions and all campuses. What do you know about the changes? What would you like to know?
The stated purpose of the release time changes are to:
1) Authorize Program/Discipline Head duties and responsibilities, and
2) Authorize responsibilities related to a special project.

How does the change affect the release time for the ATD positions that don't officially exist?
Titles will now be Program Head and Discipline Head. The spring 2009 allocation of release time was reduced by 79 credit hours as compared to spring 2008.
79 hours? That's scary if we only had 99; not so bad if we had 790. How mandy did we have?

Were the reductions taken fairly or equally from each campus? Were they taken evenly from all areas?
Based on the information I have there was 302 hours of unfunded release time awarded in spring 09 and a total of 785.5 hours for the 07-08 academic year. The new proposal holds non-funded release time to a maximum of 610 credit hours in an academic year.
Were the reductions taken fairly or equally from each campus? Were they taken evenly from all areas? These are really good questions. Unfortunately, I cannot answer them based on the information I was provided. I believe the reallocation was done primarily based on FTE’s.

Because of the lack of communication from administration downward, the rumour mill has heard that Norfolk took the biggest hit on reduction in release hours (again rumour) due to our Provost not advocating to keep as many as he could. Rumour also has it that Chesapeake lost no release hours.
So as I see it, it really depends on the strength of Provost as to the fairness of the allocations of release time.
That's when you have to judge how much you want to trust the rumor mill. Chesapeake had been underfunded in terms of release time for a while. It's the campus that's grown the most of late, yet it's release time didn't grow with it. The cuts were not done across the board for reasons such as that. They had to make the release time equitable across the campuses AND cut the time simultaneously.

I understand that there is more to the release time cuts, but it is difficult in the trenches to understand the reasoning when you are not told, informed, or had it explained to you from the administration or from the Faculty Senate.
I understand that Mike Summers informed the College Faculty Senate about the release time cuts, but no one from the Norfolk Campus was informed about this issue. Department Chairs went into a meeting with the Provost not knowing a thing about the cuts. This is a sad lack of communication with people who do a lot of work with little recognition, and now with less release hours. Sad way to treat people.
